The Heart and Soul of the Special Forces I knew was the Non-Commissioned Officer. He was the essence, the lifeblood, and the fabric which held it all together. Without him, Special Forces could not exist.

In 1967, with few exceptions, the enlisted personnel of Project Delta were all Non-Commissioned Officers. The average age was 31. And like old wine, these ordinary men, once good, had become great. Without a doubt, the most highly trained, and competent soldier in the world.

These Delta NCOs formed a new legion, and wrote a significant chapter in the history of Special Warfare. This Brotherhood of professionals, now old men, had cut the trail, and marked the LZ that others might come.
